The arrival of the first foals by Byword brought to an end months of anticipation for Ashley McNab and Middlefield Stud’s Rob Pickering, who purchased the Gr.1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes winner from Juddmonte Farms. And by all accounts, they are living up to their expectations.
“Byword already has five foals at Middlefield and we are more than delighted,” remarked Ashley. “According to Rob, the colt out of my Gr.1 winner Urabamba is one of the best he has ever bred.
“The horse seems to stamp them all, down to the white markings, and all the foals are showing the same quality that Byword has. Generally so far, they have all been of a good size and have good bone. An interesting fact that we have noticed with all of them is that they are extremely eager to stand very soon after birth and are quite persistent in their quest to do so on their own.”
A half-brother to the four-times Gr.1 winner Proviso (Dansili), Byword has been relocated to stand alongside Fort Wood and Ideal World at the famed Mauritzfontein Stud and, according to stud manager Guy Murdoch, will cover 100 plus mares: “Mauritzfontein will be supporting him with around two dozen, which include Gr.l winner Escoleta Fitz, Gr.l SA Oaks winner Monyela, Sfakesplaced Gay Fartuna and Hancock News, as well as daughters of Danehill and Sadler’s Wells.”
Wilgerbosdrift has 20 mares scheduled to visit the son of Peintre Celebre, headed by champion juvenile Rat Burana, Gr.1 winner Zirconium and Gr.1 SA Oaks victress Cyber Gento.
